2009 Toyota Matrix Preview
Matrix redesigned for 2009 to offer more power, sportiness
The all-new 2009 Toyota Matrix, the Canadian-built sport crossover vehicle, features new powertrains for improved performance, all-wheel-drive models and new styling.
The all-new Matrix comes in four models: Matrix, Matrix XR, Matrix XRS and Matrix AWD.
A choice of two engines is now available: a 1.8-litre four-cylinder that produces up to 132 hp at 6,000 rpm and up to 128 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm, or a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates up to 158 hp at 6,000 rpm and up to 162 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Towing capacity is 680 kg (1500 lb).
Powertrain options include a choice of front wheel drive or all-wheel-drive, and a choice of three transmissions: a five-speed manual, a four-speed automatic and a five-speed automatic.
Other changes for the new model year include an upgraded front and rear suspension for improved handling, and rack and pinion electric power steering that eliminates hydraulic components that need oil.
The interior that accommodates up to five passengers with 0.56 cubic metres (19.8 cubic feet) of cargo space or two passengers and up to 1.36 cubic metres (48 cubic feet) of cargo. Redesigned seats maintain comfort and headroom while fitting the vehicle's new, lower profile. Interior storage spaces have been redesigned as well.
A tilt/telescopic steering column is included, as is a new, high-efficiency climate control system for improved heating and cooling.
A restyled, coupe-like exterior that features a wider track and lower roofline while still maintaining interior space and utility. The interior boasts a “jet cockpit” design and Optitron gauges on all models. The gauges are now framed with matte silver (the previous shiny chrome-framed gauges reflected sunlight directly into the driver's eyes).
The new model features more demanding manufacturing tolerances to increase the body structure's rigidity and reduce vibration and noise, and adheres to new global benchmarks for quality and durability
A new, impact-absorbing body structure is designed to achieve top marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. All models are equipped with six airbags, including dual-stage driver and passenger airbags, front seat mounted side airbags and front and rear side/curtain airbags. Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control are available as options.
Power-assisted Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake-force distribution (EBD) are fitted as standard equipment on all models.
