2007 North American Car & Truck of the Year
Saturn Aura, Chevrolet Silverado take North American Car and Truck of the Year titles
Detroit, MI -- General Motors started off the 2007 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS, also known as the Detroit Auto Show) with a bang when its new full-size pickup, the Chevrolet Silverado, and its new mid-size sedan, the Saturn Aura, won the North American Truck and Car of the Year awards.
"I just want to go, 'Yes!'," said Jill Lajdziak, Saturn vice-president for sales, service and marketing, while she pumped her fist in the air. "Sometimes you have to speak from the heart. This is a great day for General Motors, for Chevrolet and for Saturn."
Chevrolet general manager Ed Peper was a little more restrained but also pleased as he accepted Chevrolet's award. "Inside, we have always felt we had the best truck, but this award validates those feelings."
Contenders for the North American Car of the Year were the:
Saturn Aura (winner)
Honda Fit (runner-up)
For the North American Truck of the Year the contenders were the:
Chevrolet Silverado (winner)
Ford Edge (runner-up)
Mazda CX-7 (runner-up).
The North American Car and Truck of the Year awards are voted by 49 independent journalists from the United States and Canada.
The 2007 Canadian Car and Utility Vehicle (Truck) of the Year awards will be announced at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto Feb. 14, 2007. The contenders are the winners in each of 13 car and truck categories from the annual TestFest held by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) in October 2006.
Contenders for the Canadian Car of the Year include the:
BMW 3-Series Coupe
Lexus ES 350
Toyota Camry Hybrid
Canadian Truck of the Year contenders include the:
Acura RDX Technology Package
Mercedes-Benz GL Class
(The new Chevy Silverado, winner of the North American Truck of the Year, was not ready in time to be entered in the Canadian competition, thus was not a contender.)
